Colombian Leader Warns 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, further raising strains between the two countries following American military units attacked Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president hinted at similar use of force against Bogotá, stating the nation faces serious problems and led by a sick man who likes making the drug and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Strained Relationship

This nation was historically a key ally of Washington in the campaign against narcotics trade and received bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have soured markedly following Trump came to office.

The nation's drug trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members disbanded subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Strong Answer

When asked whether a military operation similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a narco," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted in a post.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And should they arrest me, whom a significant portion of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Leader

He passed part of his youth as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister reported that Petro's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, yet figures spanning the political spectrum have denounced the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Pressure

American authorities revoked his travel authorization after he urged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes against the president, his spouse and several close collaborators.

At the same time while America bolstered its forces in the Caribbean and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations against vessels off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
