New research indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
